Do we know what we like?
I’m re-reading Timothy Wilson’s book Strangers to Ourselves and it reminds me of how surprised I was when I looked at my del.icio.us tags in cloud mode. Had you asked me what I was interested in, I would have struggled to come up with a few things and would have most like said whatever was recent and accessible to memory. I certainly wouldn’t have been able to generate such a precise statement of my preferences. It’s a snapshot I couldn’t get by introspection alone. The tags don’t lie.
