Speech and Music

by F.

Diana Deutsch studies the psychology of music at UCSD. Here is part of a radio interview on WNYC in which she lets us experience speech changing into music. Wonderful and amazing. While the variation in pitch in normal speech isn’t that much, somehow, when segments of speech are looped, we seem to exaggerate the pitch change. The result? Music. “Sometimes behaves so strangely…”

WARNING: this tune will become an ear-worm.
