15,000 Useful Phrases
I’m not sure if there are exactly 15,000 phrases in Grenville Kleiser’s aptly named book Fifteen Thousand Useful Phrases, nor am I sure that all of them are useful. I am pretty sure, however, that most are highly entertaining. They were compiled around 1919 by a “former… instructor in public speaking at Yale Divinity School.”
The full title of the book is—take a deep breath—Fifteen Thousand Useful Phrases: A Practical Handbook Of Pertinent Expressions, Striking Similes, Literary, Commercial, Conversational, And Oratorical Terms, For The Embellishment Of Speech And Literature, And The Improvement Of The Vocabulary Of Those Persons Who Read, Write, And Speak English.
