On Smells

by F.

It’s been cold around these parts and the cold seems to make smells more salient. I’m not sure why or if that’s really the way it works, smelliologically speaking, but that’s the way it feels. Today I was riding my bike and, coming through a nearby neighborhood, thought I smelled chinese food. Like spring rolls. Something like that. But there are no restaurants in that neighborhood. I didn’t think much about it as I pulled up behind a red Passat at a stop light. The smell was stronger but I thought, “No. It must be something else.” I inched closer to the car. On the trunk was a little silver badge: “Powered by biodiesel.”
