Borat

by F.

We saw Borat last night in a packed movie theater. Having read a few reviews, I was ready to laugh. But as the picture opened, I started to get worried. Yeah, the accent and stuff was funny. Sort of. But this is really just Andy Kaufman’s Latka Gravis character on Taxi doing Punk’d. So if you like that sort of thing—people don’t know the joke is on them—you’ll love this movie. If not, I don’t think there’s much there comedically. The overwhelming feeling I had leaving the theater was disgust not amusement. Sure, the redneck Americans say some crazy shit about gays and muslims. But I think we pretty much know that redneck Americans are rednecks. Nothing really new or funny there. If you live under a rock, you may find this movie illuminating.
