I’m writing a piece about some aspects of graph theory applied to various worldly phenomena—the Web, social networks, markets. I was reading along about Euler and Paul Erdos (of “My mind is open,” fame) and started to think to myself, “This is quite interesting, but…it could be better.” Why?
Largely because it doesn’t concern animals (including people). I love science as much as the next materialist, but it has to concern something living if it’s going to trip my trigger. Plants? Plants are fairly dull to me. Almost all animals, though, are interesting. But interest increased rapidly with amount of fur. Meerkats, hamsters, cats. All quite fascinating. Geckos—not so much. People? Less furry but without question the most interesting objects on the planet.
