Hitachino Nest Beer
Not only is the owl on the bottle cute, the beer inside is both unique and extremely tasty. Strange, though. Kind of salty. Tastes like seaweed to me. I drank a bottle warm and it was excellent. Here’s how the Kiuchi brewery describes it:
A refreshing mildly hopped Belgian styled beer with a complex flavor of coriander, orange peel, nutmeg. White Ale has won gold medals at several beer competitions in U.K. and U.S. This is deffinitely one of HITACHINO’s top-selling beers both in Japan and U.S.
Very good, and full of weird chunks of something. (They’re quite small.) Does it really taste like coriander, you ask, or is this just some wine snob-esque sort of statement? (“Oh, yes, this one has notes of hickory, pear, and a hint—a kiss of chocolate.”) Actually, it does. I grabbed the powdered coriander from the cupboard and took a sniff. Exactly the same flavor. I think I can even taste the orange peel. There’s a sort of sweetness to the beer—but it’s not cloying.
